Cloud Computing Pioneer Adrian Cockcroft Joins Smartscale Systems Advisory Board

CAMPBELL, Calif., June 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Adrian Cockcroft, acclaimed Author, Speaker and Cloud Systems Architect, has joined the Advisory Board of cloud infrastructure management pioneer Smartscale Systems. His expertise in cloud operations architecture and design will round out the team of entrepreneurs and corporate technology leaders and help guide strategy.

Adrian has extensive experience in enterprise computing sales, marketing, product management and engineering from the 16 years he spent at Sun Microsystems. He became a Sun Distinguished Engineer in 1999. In 2003 as Sun Microsystems' Chief Architect for High Performance Technical Computing, Adrian lead development of Sun's Grid Reference Architecture, and was Sun's technical representative for the Enterprise Grid Alliance and Global Grid Forum. Early work on what would later become "clouds" included research on utility computing metrics, and "Capacity Planning for Virtualized Datacenters". Moving on to join eBay as a Distinguished Availability Engineer in Operations Architecture, Adrian was then a founding member of eBay Research Labs in 2005, leading research projects on distributed systems, mobile, and datacenter cost models.

Over the last four years at Netflix Adrian has managed and architected development of a new highly available, scalable and global consumer web service platform optimized for the cloud. He is now directing the over-all cloud architecture, with a focus on NoSQL storage systems, and performance monitoring and analysis tools.

He is best known as the author of several books on systems performance including – "Sun Performance and Tuning" (two bestselling editions, 1994 and 1998); "Resource Management" (1999); and "Capacity Planning for Web Services" (2001). He was the 2007 recipient of the Computer Measurement Group's A.A.Michelson Award for lifetime contribution to performance measurement.
